Establishment

The Foundation of Virumaa Museums (Virumaa Muuseumid) was established in May 2002 by the Estonian Ministry of Culture, City of Rakvere and Vihula Rural Municipality. The act was signed in the assembly hall of Lääne-Viru County Government by Minister Signe Kivi, Mayor Matti Jõe and Rural Municipality Mayor Enn Siska. Ants Leemets was appointed director of the foundation. Virumaa Museums was the first museum in Estonia that started as a foundation.


Units

Palmse Manor, Rakvere Castle, Rakvere Exhibition House, Rakvere Citizen’s Museum, Karepa Kalame Farm, Altja Tavern and net sheds have been under Virumaa Museums since the foundation was established. Toolse Castle was added in 2004. 
 

Earlier there was Rakvere Museum

The history of Rakvere Museum that became a part of Virumaa Museums dates back to 1927 when the articles of the Rakvere Museum Society were approved.

Even earlier there was Palmse Manor

The historical Palmse Manor that was restored by Lahemaa National Park was transferred from the Ministry of the Environment to the Ministry of Culture, which assigned the property and other assets of the manor to the foundation.  
 

Another major undertaking in 1927 was excavations in the castle.

The first display of Rakvere Museum was opened in three rooms of the southern part of the current central library on the 7th of December, 1930.

Karepa heritage

Karepa Kalame Farm belonged to the artist Richard Sagrits and his family. After the death of his wife the farm was bequeathed to Rakvere Museum.
 

Toolse Castle

Toolse Castle was added in 2004 when we requested the ownerless property from Minister of Culture Urmas Paet.
