Tolsburg – Northern Border of German Empire

Toolse Castle or Tolsburg was completed in 1471 to protect the harbour that was situated at the bay near the castle. Wolthus von Herse, a master of the Livonian Order, is considered to be the builder of the castle.  He was said to have alienated the land under the building illegally from the heirs of Vike Wrangel, the lord of Selja Manor. Toolse Castle was the northernmost castle in the Teutonic Order and Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. The walls preserved till now are authentic. No restoration has been carried out there. Only conservation has been done to ensure the originality of the walls. The castle at the seaside is exciting both for its architecture, being one of the best preserved small castles, and for its stories. Knights and pirates live there now, too. Treasure hunt, battles and ships – this is Toolsburg today.
